Grease Trap Pumping
The pumping process
Pumping uses a vacuum hose to remove everything inside the trap: the floating grease layer, the water in the middle and the solids that settle at the bottom. Removing only the top layer leaves solids behind, which steadily reduces the space available for separation.
Small indoor traps can be pumped with a portable unit or a hose from the truck. The waste is transported to a facility permitted to accept grease trap waste, never dumped into another drain.
Signs a trap needs pumping
Slow drains, gurgling, sour odors near sinks and water rising in floor drains are all signs that a trap has reached capacity. Grease showing at the outlet or sample port means it is already passing through to the sewer.
Between visits
Scraping plates into the trash, using sink strainers, collecting fryer oil for recycling and avoiding chemical drain openers all help a trap last longer between pump-outs.
